On September 19th, 1944 the Allies started a campaign to take over a certain plot of land filled with Germans that resulted in a 3 month long series of pierce battles between the Axis and Allies troops. At the end, the Allies achieved their objective, however the battle is chalked down to a German decisive victory. This is so because the Allies had suffered 5,000 more casualties than the Axis, and the land they had taken over did not have much strategic value. The Allies lost 33,000 men and the Axis 28,000. The Allies mainly attacked through thick forest land, which made the German air burst artillery shells being extremely effective due to them hitting the trees and practically raining down shrapnel onto the American troops. In the end, the Allies pushed the Germans back, but not without suffering heavy casualties and losses in equipment and manpower.
